In video purportedly demonstrating the incident on Wednesday, two federal freeway police officers are found attempting to restrain 38 year-previous Genivaldo de Jesus Santos on the ground.
The footage in the greatly-shared online video is edited, leaving gaps in which it is unclear what transpired involving the clips.
The future clip exhibits officers allegedly putting Santos in the trunk of a Federal Freeway Police patrol SUV. The individual seems to push again towards the officers’ endeavours to get them completely into the car.
In an additional clip, officers are proven employing the trunk of the police car or truck to pin down the man’s legs when the auto fills with an unidentified white smoke or gasoline. The trapped person is listened to screaming. In one more clip, the law enforcement officers are seen holding the man’s legs down whilst the gasoline dissipates, and soon after about a minute and a half, his legs appear to end shifting. The officers are observed holding the trunk of the automobile closed.
Federal Highway Police from the state of Sergipe explained in a statement that Santos “actively resisted” the officer’s technique with “aggressiveness” and the police officers experienced to use “immobilization methods and instruments of lessen offensive prospective” to contain him.
The law enforcement say the guy “fell ill” whilst getting transported back again to the station and afterwards died in the medical center.
The Sergipe’s coroner’s business (IML) said in a statement that Santos died of asphyxiation but mentioned “it was not feasible to establish the rapid result in” of it. IML stated it would perform additional examinations to set up “how the asphyxia process took put.”
Police have opened an inside investigation into the scenario.
